Valiant Woman Awards, Young Christian Woman Awards, and Human Rights Award
CWU of Greater Dayton: Valiant Woman Awards The winners in 2024 are: Pam Hamby and Ashton McDaniel A Valiant Woman is a woman who has given service to CWU, her church, and her community. She may or may not be an actual leader, but is always someone who leads by example. A Valiant Woman is a woman who lives the Gospel message in her everyday life. A certificate and a lapel pin is given to each of the recipients. |
Pam Hamby
Pam Hamby was born in Dayton in 1947. She grew up in Bearshear Evangelical United Brethren Church in Harrison Township, which later merged with the Methodist Church. She graduated from Colonel White High School. In 1971, she graduated from Wright State University, then she worked for thirty-five years in a series of law firms in downtown Dayton. Pam joined Church Women United around 2006. She began as key woman for Community United Methodist Church in Riverside. Her volunteer experiences first were with the newsletter mailing committee. She then became the Mercy Manor Board representative, local secretary, and then President. She became State of Ohio secretary, a position she still holds. She has attended many state assemblies and has helped with the planning. She attended that National CWU Conference in Louisville, Tennessee. Today Pam is a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. She serves as secretary of United Women in Faith. She is a board member of Ohio Quilts and a member of West Central West Ohio Quilts. She has made over fifty quilts. For the last three or four years, Pam has been a volunteer long-term care ombudsman visiting three nursing homes in Dayton. She loves meeting residents and making sure their rights are respected. She has travelled with Road Scholar groups to Russia and China. She has travelled with other groups also. In 2023, she traveled to Iceland. Her favorite Bible verse is I John 1:5 “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” She is a loyal friend and dedicated disciple of Christ. Pam is a great example of a Valiant Woman in her community and church. |
Ashton McDaniel
Ashton McDaniel has been a jewel within our community for decades as her love and light is infectious to all that know her. Her list of achievements is just the tip of the iceberg. One can see her passion for others through all the things she has done in her community, for her family and within the Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church. She has one son, Kirk, and a deceased daughter Leslie. She has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Ashton is a Proverbs 31:28 woman: her children and family call her blessed. It is because of her undying love for her family that she created a yearly family reunion. It is now a huge part of her family legacy. Ashton found the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church where she is currently a member. A few of the positions she holds include Missionary Society, Sunday School, Seniors Saints and Women’s Day Choir. Mrs. McDaniel retired from United States Post Office as one of the first female letter carriers. She built positive relationships within the neighborhoods where she delivered. Her customer service and work ethic paved the way for future generations of female carriers. She served on the board of Mercy Manor a transitional housing program for women returning from prison. During her term on the board, she worked on the revitalization of the Grosvenor Avenue location. Ashton was the founder of Edgemont Survival TESA which included several streets and fifty members. As a breast cancer survivor, she was asked to model hats on a calendar with other female leaders in Dayton. The proceeds were used to support Kettering Hospital providing free mammograms. Ashton’s list of awards and accomplishments speak volumes about her huge heart and the kindness she spreads throughout her community. Over the years she has held several positions and presented many awards. She was president of the Church Women United in Greater Dayton from 2002-2004. She served as Key Woman of her church for many years and was Ecumenical Celebrations Chairperson. She continues to participate in CWU in Dayton celebrations. She was Mary Scott Nursing Home Volunteer of 2019. She received a Phenomenal Woman award from the Believers Church Trailblazers and numerous community service awards for volunteering. She was a graduate of the City of Dayton Circle Leadership Institute. She was a speaker at the Miami Valley Assembly Golden Awareness luncheon. Mrs. McDaniel has spent her entire life helping and loving others. Her spunk and spirit continue to keep her involved in her community. The world is a better place because Ashton is in it. |

Congratulations to these three talented young Christian Women!
Ashley M. Frierson is a faithful and dedicated young Christian woman who has served in many positions within her local church, Corinthian Missionary Baptist. She served several years with the Easter breakfast. Also, she was co-chair for Women’s Day and surpassed the financial goal. She has served on the sunshine card committee for the general missionary. Ashley is active in Sunday School, the general missionary, and in the Lydia Circle. A most recent position is director for girls talk – a mentoring program for young ladies. The program has been thriving under her leadership.
Ashley is an alumnus of the University of Cincinnati with a BS in biomedical engineering. She encourages others struggling in college. She works with her family reunion to continue its 52-year tradition. She has great concern for older people with cards, calls, and other caring acts. Ashley line dances at the local Y and volunteers with Miami Valley Meals program. She is employed by Adair Pharmaceuticals in the quality department. Ashley is a willing servant, freely giving of her time, talent and energy. She is well-rounded and most deserving of this award. |
Mikayla Hummons, age 23, graduated from Stivers School of the Arts in 2019. There she studied and majored in Theatre and performed in many shows. Throughout high school, she participated in track and field, as well as basketball. In 2017, Mikayla and three other young ladies broke the 4 x 2 track record that was set 30 years ago at Welcome Stadium. Their names were placed on the stadium wall.
Mikayla participated in the 2019 Cotillion and received a scholarship for her future studies. She had the opportunity to travel to Japan in her senior year of high school through the educational tours program. At the end of her senior year of high school, Mikayla received multiple awards. Some of those awards included the 2019 Athlete of the Year Award, Superintendent Scholar Athlete Award, the Golf Scholarship, and many more. She collected and received over $350,000 in scholarships. After her high school graduation, Mikayla attended Johnson and Wales University in Denver, CO for her first year of college on an academic scholarship. Unfortunately, due to COVID the school closed down and she continued her journey at Elmhurst University in Chicago, Illinois where she was recruited to run track. Mikayla also received an academic scholarship to attend Elmhurst. Throughout her college years, Mikayla participated in various activities. She worked alongside the University’s Chaplain where she was the Coordinator of the United Church of Christ. Mikayla graduated from Elmhurst University in May of 2023 with her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After college she worked as a leasing consultant for Simms Development throughout the summer. Mikayla now works for American Airlines. Mikayla attends St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church where she is very active and serves as a Junior Steward. In all of her accomplishments, she gives God all the glory who is the head of her life. |
Connie Sinks graduated from West Carrollton High School and also Wright State University. For three years she has worked as an elementary education teacher in Dayton, Ohio Public Schools.
She serves as Church Clerk for Dorothy Lane American Baptist Church in Kettering, Ohio. She recently served on the Search Committee as the church looked for a new pastor. She coordinates the Primary Class during Worship by securing teachers and materials. Connie has served on the Christian Education Board for several years. Also, she has been Chairperson of the Nominating Committee. Connie is instrumental in so many activities at her church – Easter Egg Hunt, Fall Family Night, Church Christmas Program. When her church hosted the CWU Human Rights Celebration, she participated in the program. Connie is also our church newsletter editor. We are truly blessed to have such a fine young woman serving Christ in our midst. |
