Gail Penney
Gail Penney was born in Hamilton, Ohio, and was raised by her grandparents. Her grandmother started taking her to White Oak Christian Church near Mt. Healthy in 1940 when she was just a few weeks old. She has remained a life-long member of Disciples of Christ. Her grandfather had a music store and gave lessons in their home, and this environment instilled a love for music – of all kinds. She lived in Pasadena, Texas, for a few years where she attended the University of Houston. In 1967, she began working at Dayton Walther Corporation, the old Dayton Steel Foundry. When she retired in 2000, she was in the position of Administrative Assistant to the VP of Engineering which she had held since 1987. Upon moving to Dayton in 1967, Gail joined Santa Clara Disciples of Christ Church which merged with Hillcrest Disciples of Christ Church. In 1996 a new church was built, United Christian Church, in the Clayton-Englewood area. Gail has served as President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Leader of the Women’s Group; she was Church Treasurer for 25 years; and she was also a Church Elder. For many years, she and her husband, John, were part of the transportation team which was responsible for getting those who were otherwise unable to attend church. Riding with those elderly ladies several hours a month was a treat! They were a valuable lesson in humanity. Gail has been a member of Church Women United for many years — currently serving as a vice-president. She heads up a committee for preparing the CWU newsletters for mailing. She feels she has been so fortunate to meet and be a part of an organization with so many ladies who value God and Community — giving of their time and service, just as she has tried to do her entire life. Gail raised four children before marrying John; between them, they have seven children, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Gail continues to love music, theater productions, family, her many friends, and the furry friends, too. Congratulations to Gail upon receiving the Valiant Woman Award! |
